Our Mission: Empowering Birthing People in Silver Spring and Beyond

Serving all Maryland counties including Montgomery County, Baltimore, Prince George's County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, and beyond.

Woven Womb is a Maryland-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Silver Spring, dedicated to reducing and ultimately preventing maternal mortality across the state. We empower women and all birthing people by providing essential resources, financial support, advocacy, and community events to foster resilience, independence, and equitable healthcare access. Operating primarily in Montgomery County and throughout Maryland, our initiatives address racial disparities in maternal health, ensuring that every pregnancy and postpartum journey is safe and supported. In Maryland, where maternal mortality rates highlight stark racial inequities—Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women—Woven Womb is committed to change. We collaborate with local healthcare providers, volunteer doulas, lawyers, and medical professionals to offer compassionate, bias-free support. Whether you're in Silver Spring, Bethesda, or Annapolis, our network helps bridge gaps in prenatal care, postpartum recovery, and overall women's health.

Our Maryland Impact:

Every year, too many Maryland mothers lose their lives to preventable complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Black women in Maryland are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Woven Womb exists to change these statistics by advocating for better care and providing the support and resources every Maryland mother deserves.

The maternal mortality crisis affects families across all Maryland counties, from urban Baltimore to rural areas, from affluent Montgomery County neighborhoods to underserved communities. We see the devastating impact firsthand: children growing up without mothers, partners facing grief and single parenthood, families forever changed by preventable deaths. This crisis demands immediate action and sustained community commitment.

Did YOU know?

Maryland faces significant challenges in maternal and infant mortality, with racial disparities exacerbating the issue. According to recent data from the Maryland Department of Health, Black women in the state experience higher rates of pregnancy-related deaths due to factors like chronic conditions and unequal care.

Factors Contributing to Racial Disparities in Maryland Maternal Health

Physical Health Challenges

Black women are more likely than white women to have certain chronic health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes and are more likely to be obese. These conditions can have a compromising effect on a person's health throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

Healthcare Access

Comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care is vital, yet many Black women in Maryland face financial hurdles or lack insurance. Woven Womb partners with local clinics in Silver Spring to ensure accessible care for underserved communities.

Stress

Despite the excitement and joys of parenthood, pregnancy and childbirth can introduce substantial stress to a person's life. After birth, parents are sent home with hardly any support. This stress is exacerbated for black women, who are additionally exposed to chronic stressors related to racial discrimination and inequality in the U.S. Stress is associated with health problems, including weakening of the immune, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems.

Quality of Care

Even with insurance, Black patients in Maryland often receive lower-quality care. Studies show that educated Black women still face higher risks than less-educated white women. Woven Womb advocates for bias-free healthcare training statewide.

At Woven Womb, we refuse to accept these statistics. Based in Silver Spring, MD, we're combating inequities by providing tailored resources, financial aid, and advocacy. Join us in building a Maryland where no life is lost to preventable maternal health issues. Your support can change lives in our community.

According to the World Health Organization and Maryland health reports, most maternal deaths are preventable with timely intervention. Woven Womb is making this a reality in Montgomery County through high-quality, inclusive support.

Together, we can create a future where no Maryland mother is left behind.
